(POST 38) SINGIN IN THE RAIN

SINGIN IN THE RAIN

"SINGIN in the rain"

setting:
This scene is set on the street, whilst raining. This whole scene conveys Don's love for Kathy, after leaving her for the night. I think setting this scene in the rain shows Don's excitement and happiness. As he spins and dances down the street, there is a lot of space to use. I think they set this scene on a public street, to take advantage of the large areas for the dancing and enthusiasm. This large area which he dances in, could convey how big dons feelings are for Kathy.
Props:

The one and only main prop in this scene, is the black umbrella. He uses this umbrella to shield himself from the rain at the start. This could symbolise him shielding himself from the things getting in the way of their relationship. on the other hand, as he dances away, in the middle he starts to take his umbrella down, which could suggest if things get in the way you have to deal with them. He uses his umbrella in his dance moves, this adds extra energy and movement.

Costume:

The costumes they are wearing consists of a matching black trousers and blazer. He is also wearing a  light coloured shirt and a black tie, dressed with some smart shoes. he also dressed this outfit with a light brown hat which gets wet after he ditches his umbrella. His mood contrasts to the colour of his suit as its quite dark and dull. He is wearing these shoes so he can tap dance and move properly expressing his feelings. Kathy is wearing a yellow raincoat which also contrats to the colour of Don's costume. However, the colour of her coat matches the mood and feeling don has.

Makeup/hair:

The makeup and hair here, are not as visible in this scene as the others, due to the rain. Don's hair style is covered by his hat, while Kathy's hair is also covered. The makeup is used on Don on this scene mainly, as Kathy is barely in this part.

Cinematography:

The lighting here, creates a very dull and gloomy atmosphere and surrounding. This contrasts to Don's mood, however, there is no natural source of light In this scene; as its set at night with no daytime light. The only source of light are the lampposts, which are very faded. using lampposts is artificial light which can sometimes give a fake light effect which isn't as successful and natural light. including little light, demonstrates the contrast between don's personality and and the weather. This scene makes the audience have faith and excitement, even when its raining and miserable.

Camera angles and movement:

Camera angles and movement in other scenes, are basically the same in this scene.  The camera follows Don's movements in the same camera frame, this interests the audience as it makes us feel like we are standing right in front of them. His dance moves, are really enthusiastic and energetic. They use camera angles for instance, wide shot, close up, high shot, and over the shoulder. There are various angles which make the film more interesting. including a high shot gets the scale of the street and it's surroundings.

Diegetic and non- diegetic sound:

The diegetic sounds in this scene would be the sound effects and ambient sounds. For instance the tapping of his shoes and the rain on the ground and on his umbrella. This makes it more interesting for the audience as it comes across as more dramatic. The non diegetic sounds consist of the additional music and background track for the actual song. This scene is the most known scene out of this film, due to it being so popular to musical lovers. Rain drops are quite satisfying for some people to hear and watch This contrasts to his mood, as when it rains it normally brings a dull mood down with it.

Editing:

The camera movement follows the movement of the character, which conveys how his actions is what the audience are focussing on. The edited sound effects over top are really successful and make the scene even better. These shots show a Temporal relationship as the dancing is in time with the music. The lighting has also been edited to make it hasher and brighter. This scene is really effective, and

"Make Em Laugh"
Setting:

In this scene, it's mainly set on a stage which is already set up. The area is really spacious, as there are various rooms which he enters; which conveys how their needs to be a lot of space for him to dance to do this scene. The camera follows him around as every move he makes leads him into the next movement. This setting gives off a happy and comfortable atmosphere due to the background looking like the inside of a house. The characters state of mind also makes the audience feel comfortable and safe due to the characters personality, which compliments the surroundings.

Props

Props are the main focus in this scene, as the way he moves and every movement he makes takes him to a different prop. At the start of this scene, he picks up a hat as they go past him. The hat is one of the main prop in the 4minute clip. The hat is visible through this whole scene. This conveys how, anything can make the atmosphere interesting and funny. He makes the hat his prop in which he uses to get his point across at the start. He also plays the piano at the beginning, which demonstrates how music can show different emotions through different sounds. As he moves from one place to another planks of wood get in his way, however he does go around them to dodge them. This could implie how there will be things in life which will affect you, yet you have to move around them and continuing being happy. In the middle of the scene he finds a sofa and a doll which is placed on the sofa. He uses the sofa as a prop to express his movements with the doll. The doll could symbolise a person he likes. He uses his imagination to create these dance moves, which could demonstrate how imagination is a key part of life.

Costume:
The costume in this scene is very neutral and basic. His dance moves are very expressive, which would make us think the his style would be too. This conveys how expressiveness doesn't always make people laugh, is what you do and the way you go about it that's entertains people. He is wearing a light coloured shirt which could suggest happiness. He also wears a pair of brown trousers.

Makeup/Hair:

Makeup is a very small part of mise en scene in this scene, as its very basic. You would expect the makeup to be expressive due to the performance in this scene. However, again expressiveness doesn't always make people "laugh". His hair is styled and combed back, even though his head is covered by the hat.

Cinematography:

The lighting in this scene, Is quite artificial due to it being a stage. there are some lamps and spotlights which add a warm and direct glow to the stage. you can tell this, as these lights create dark and harsh shadows. The lighting may have also been edited to create more of a contrast between

Camera angles and movement:

There aren't many camera angles in this scene, as there is only one angle which follows every move he makes. The camera is always directly in front of him and moves from right to left depending on his expressive movements. the camera is always focussed on him and his direction. Having the camera movement like this, involves the audience a lot more as when we watch films ect. we move our eyes from left to right. This could convey the flow of movement. They also use wide shots to let the audience know the space they are using.

Diegetic and non- diegetic sounds:

There are a few aspects of each type of sound, Diegetic and non - Diegetic. The diegetic sounds consist of sounds effects and ambient sounds , for instance there was drums over top of the scene when he did the backflips at the end, this makes it look more dramatic.  There was also speech and dialogue from the character singing. The non diegetic sounds include additional music to the background to make the dancing in time and have a guideline.

Editing:

The editing in this scene doesn't consist of much as the camera angles and movement, all combine together without overlapping the separate shots. Their are sounds effects which have been edited over the top. This a temporal relationship as the sound effects and music link in time with the movement of the character. This makes the more entertaining and laughable for the audience.

"you were meant for me"

Setting:

This scene has an amazing setting. It is set in a huge open space which contains a stage. This shows a huge contrast to the stage they are originally performing on. He takes her to this setting which could convey how he wants to show her the beauty on this stage. Using this stage in this film, conveys their dreams in theatre as their reactions show how they are feeling.

props:

A lot of props are included in this scene. when they first enter the stage, he turns on the sunset,  this could convey how he wants to set the scene, as he describes the things he displays on the stage. he turns the spot lights on, and guides her to the ladder. The ladder in this scene is the main important prop, as it shows how she is special, and is higher in their relationship. This shows how he wants to make her feel in control. The Ladder also symbolises Romeo and Juliet, due to Juliet being a higher level, and Romeo looks up to her. As she steps down form the ladder, they are separated from it. The part that is separated is their hearts, which conveys how things may get in the way in their relationship.
He turns on the spotlights behind her and one directly on her and also turns the fan on which is right in front of her.  All of these props are pointed towards her, to show her his respect and love towards her. This makes the audience feel happy for her, as their expressions show their love for each other.

Costume:

The costume he wears, is all white which suggest purity and pleasantness. white is also a reference to angels and heaven, which could convey how he is also special. He wears white trousers with a white shirt and a white vest with a red stripe on the V-neck. He also wears white and black shoes.
The costume she wears in this scene, is a very thin, light coloured sheer material. This implies how she is delicate and unique. The light coloured thin material dress she is wearing, rips really easily, which could symbolise her as a sensitive person. she also wears heels which match the colour of her dress. The heels could demonstrate how she is slightly above ground.

Makeup/Hair:

The makeup in this scene, is very different to the days now. The makeup she wears includes, lipstick, foundation, blusher and a subtle eyeshadow and some mascara. its very neutral and basic compared to now. Her hair is very short and is styled. In the 1952's hair was styled in a particular way to look presentable. The makeup he wears, looks also subtle. His hair is combed back with a parting down the middle. This is what looked presentable for men.

Cinematography
:

In this scene particularly, the lighting is very dramatic and expressive. when they enter the big stage, its pitch black. when they step onto the stage, he turns the spotlights on, with the lite up sunset. This adds artificial light by using electric. Having artificial lighting makes the light more harsh and direct. This makes the audience aware of what is the main focus in this scene. Using spotlights on people, shows the importance of a person.

Camera Angle and Movement:

In this scene there are many different camera angles that are used. At the start of scene. They use a wide shot, this shows the audience the scale of the stage, and makes the audience realise that its a big area. They use other camera angles like behind the shoulder and different close up shots. The movement of the camera follows the movement of the characters as they dance on the stage. This makes the audience involved as, its likes the audiences eyes are following the camera the whole time.

Diegetic and non- Diegetic sound

There are diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in this scene, for instance dialogue between the two characters. There are also sound effects and ambient sounds, like when he turns the spotlights on. This interests the reader more, rather than just having dialogue as speech can become boring and after a while. The non- diegetic sounds that are added are, additional music, which has been edited over top of this scene. This adds extra background music to make the dialogue less awkward.

Editing

There has been edited music over the top of this scene, to add a background sound. From this scene, you can tell the lighting has been edited to make a contast tone. The light has been darkened and lightened, for instance on the shadows. There are various shots which are combined to make the film run smoothly. The wide scale shots and the close up shots create a contrast, which shows the scale of the area. These shots show a Spatial relationship, between one another. Most shots also have a temporal relationship, which relate to time. The dancing is in time with the music which makes the us feel relaxed, as not getting the timing right can be uncomfortable for the audience.
